The Urdu Department is the oldest department of Sahyadri College. It is small department, so the strength of the department is limited. I am proud to say that the most eminent scholars of Urdu dedicated themselves for the development of Urdu Language as well as the department in this college. The first Urdu teacher of this department was Late T. Abdul Jaleel who served many years in this department and he was mainly responsible for the establishment and development of Urdu department. After that Late Prof. Haneef Kaleem served here for five years, later Prof Fahmida Begum served here who retired as a Director of Council for the Development of Urdu Language and Literature, Human Resource Development, Delhi. Major Khaleel ur Rehman ( Major in NCC) was an active, dedicated and competitive teacher. He introduced Urdu as one of the Optional subjects in this college and this subject is still continued in Sahyadri Arts College with maximum strength of students in Kuvempu University jurisdiction. He was involved in many Literary Associations for the development of Urdu language and literature. He was the founder of Urdu Medium Phool Ban Nursery School at Shimoga during 1970-71. The same Institutions are upgraded as Independent Backward Urdu Medium Institutions at High school and P.U level by name Millath High school, Azad Girls composite college, Almehmood composite college etc., in Shimoga city. He was the first person who started Nursery Teachers Training Institute in Urdu at Millath High School Campus and also provided Hostel facilities for the candidates. In South India this was an unique Institution for the Urdu Candidates.
After Major Khaleel ur Rehman Dr. Jaleel Tanveer served many years for this department, after his services Dr. Mohammed Haneef Saif and Dr. Syed Sha Madar served in this department till the bifurcation of the college as Sahyadri Science college and Sahyadri Arts college. Dr. Mohammed Haneef Saif opted Sahyadri Arts College and Dr. Syed Sha Madar opted Sahyadri Science College. Dr. Mohammed Haneef Saif is not only a poet but also writer of many books in Urdu language.
After the bifurcation Dr. Syed Sha Madar was the founder lecturer of Urdu department in Sahyadri Science College, Shimoga. Like Major Khaleel ur Rehman he was also main responsible for the development of the Urdu Language and Literature. He is dedicated himself for the development of Urdu literature. He has written a number of books on different topics of Urdu Literature. Now he is the first Chairperson of the Department of P.G Studies and Research in Urdu, Kuvempu University, Shankarghatta. He was Member of Urdu Academy, Bangalore for three years. Apart from all, last year he was awarded “Rashtriya Gaurav award” on the basis of his literary contribution, which was received in Hyderabad. Now he is Professor and Chairman of the Department of P.G. Studies and Research in Urdu, Kuvempu University, Shankarghatta.
In the academic year 1990-91 Dr. Syed Sha Madar was transferred to Government Science College Chitradurga, in his place Smt. Fathima Hajira served in this department for the period of one year. Again Dr. Syed Sha Madar was transferred to this college and up to 3rd August 1996 he served in this college. Up to August 1997 the department was run by two part time teachers Mr. Azeez Ahmed .K and Syeda Nasira Banu.On August 3rd 1996 I, Syed Sanaulla appointed as a lecturer in Urdu at Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College. In August 1997 I have been transferred to Sahyadri Science College from Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College as lecturer and Head of the Department of Urdu. Apart from that I have served as NSS Officer for the successful period of Three years. NCC care taker for three months. I was treasurer in Campus Diversity Initiative for the period of Six years. I have represented Sahyadri Science College in Campus Diversity Initiative review workshop at Savitri Girls college, Ajmer as a coordinator for a batch of six members in 1999. I have attended Women Empowerment Conference at Jai Hind college of Arts, Science and Commerce, Dhule, Maharastra, during the year 2000. I have attended in connection with Campus Diversity Initiative “National Youth Camp” at D A V College, Dehradun during the year 2002. I was engaged in research work and I had been to Kuvempu Univesity from 1st October 2004 to 30th September 2006 under UGC Faculty Improvement Program. Mr. Sameulla Khan served as substitute lecturer in my place for the period of two years. I have awarded my Ph.D entitled “Urdu Interview Nigari- Fun aur Riwayath” in the year 2008 under the guidance of Dr. Syed Sha Madar. From the academic year 2010-11 the languages introduced for 3rd and 4th semesters of BCA and MTA degree. When the department workload increased, the college authority appoint one guest lecturer Dr. Asma Kouser for Urdu department. Now she is also working and the strength of the students is satisfactory in the department.
